2009 Jeep Lower Forty

The Mopar Jeep Lower Forty is now equipped with massive 40-inch x 13.5-inch tires mounted on Mopar’s 20-inch forged-aluminum wheels. Mopar added aggressive wheels and tires to a stock, two-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon without the use of a suspension lift. Custom front and rear fender flares are 1-inch wider and are located 4 inches higher than the stock Jeep Wrangler. A new one-piece carbon-fiber hood with a Jeep CJ-like power dome and an all-new drop-down tailgate stamped with the “Jeep” logo are added to complete the next exterior design.

Mechanical upgrades came directly out of the Mopar catalog. The Jeep Lower Forty features an all-new 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine and a Getrag 238 six-speed with manual transmission. Powertrain installations were handled by Burnsville Off-Road using an AEV 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 conversion kit.

The Mopar-supplied Dana 44 front axle and a Dana 60 rear axle, fitted with 5.38 gears and ARB air lockers, were assembled by the Dynatrac and revalved Bilstein shocks maintain vehicle stability on rough terrain.

‘Hyundai Is Awesome,’ Says Honda Chief

Hyundai’s commercial during the Super Bowl last January showed over-the-top dramatized glimpses into Lexus and BMW boardrooms, where executives angrily bemoaned Hyundai’s Genesis winning the 2009 North American Car of the Year award. While the emotions might have been exaggerated to comedic effect, awareness of Hyundai’s recent rise, at least among Japanese auto executives, is very real.

“Hyundai is awesome,” said Takanobu Ito, Honda’s chief executive, according to Autocar. “They are undoubtedly a threat because their products are cheap, and the quality is improving.”

Nissan’s chief designer, Shiro Nakamura, also acknowledged Hyundai’s improvement. “Hyundai is the biggest threat for the Japanese automakers. They have the technology, but they seem to have cheaper labor.”

Hyundai is also introducing highly competitive models in segments previously dominated by Japanese and German automakers, like the Genesis sport coupe and sedan. In August, the automaker said it would bring its Equus flagship luxury sedan to the United States market, though under a different name.

Luxury limo stretches the image of Hyundai

Its name once synonymous with cheap cars, Hyundai continues to strive for its luxury credentials. Now the Korean brand is taking aim at Mercedes-Benz and BMW with a stretched version of the Equus, its luxury flagship.

To create its limousine, Hyundai extended the Equus sedan's wheelbase 11.8 inches to about 132 inches--longer than stretched-wheelbase versions of the Mercedes S-class and BMW 7-series sedans.

The Equus Limousine is on sale in South Korea at prices ranging from about $113,700 to $123,100. That's right: almost a buck and a quarter for a Hyundai.

Orders are being taken, even though no production date has been announced for the limousine. But three bulletproof models have been built for service at South Korea's presidential palace.

The Equus shares a rear-drive platform with the Hyundai Genesis sedan. U.S. sales of the nonstretched version of the Equus begin late next year, with an expected sticker price under $60,000. Hyundai Motor America won't comment on possible U.S. sales of the Equus Limousine.
